Ishi . pattern tour

LaFolie - Ishi Dress - pattern by Straight Grain

Today I’m on the Ishi pattern tour, the latest super cute dress pattern released by An from Straight Grain. I really love An’s style, she has a wonderful eye for color matching, and I pretty much love every single thing she makes. It was a surprise to me when I realized this was the first time I was using An’s patterns, what have I been doing?? She has such cool patterns… I definitely have to change that, but for now let focus on the Ishi.

A woven dress with set in sleeves… I can’t really tell you how long it’s been since I made one… Ages it seems! But Ishi really is a beautiful design and definitely a great opportunity to get back to it. šŸ˜‰

The pattern is perfect and includes every bit of information to make it easily. I’m not going to lie those princess seams aren’t the easiest thing in the world to sew perfect, you know I’m not the most competent sewer, so I may have cheated a bit since I ended with a bit extra fabric on the bottom, shhhh don’t tell anyone; but it still looks good so I’ll embrace my flaws and try harder next time heheheh.

I chose to make short sleeves with slanted pockets for a summer dress, but I definitely want to try other things. There’s so much you can do with the options! That’s the deal with good patterns, one always feels like making a ton of versions.

At the same time I was looking trough my little stash in search of inspiration for this project I was also trying to figure out what I’d make for Francisca’s second birthday cake (I have a thing with birthday cakes). And when I came across the Andrea Lauren safari prints I had left I immediately knew what I’d make. This dress would be Francisca’s birthday dress and I’d make a Zebra cake!! Brilliant I know!! Hahahah šŸ˜‰ (one has got to put iKea horse baking pan bought to make two my little pony cakes last year to good use right? hehe)

The fabric is cotton poplin which I think worked perfectly for this, though it could use some more pressing (I may finally be developing somewhat of a pressing obsessive behavior due to an ultimatum made by Mie hehehe – thanks for helping me improve my dear ā¤ ). For the pockets I chose to use a bit of Michael Miller lattice eyelet I had left from Stylo projects and I really like how it worked out; I finished them with some bias tape the same way as Mie did on her version – she helped me decide; boy my life is so much easier and happier now that I have friends with whom to discuss sewing projects. šŸ™‚

Naturally because I’m lazy I avoided the zipper hahahah and opted for black Kam Snaps (thanks Andreia you saved my life because otherwise I would have to sew 7 button holes hehehe). šŸ˜€ I kind of feel I should have sewn some black piping on those princess seams but oh well… I love it like this too. šŸ˜‰

So hope you like what I made and there will be a zebra cake on Sunday if all goes well! Thanks a million An for having me. ā¤ I definitely want to make more Ishi dresses.

Don’t forget to check everyone’s pretty versions. There’s even an amazing contest running so you should definitely sew one and share it, those prizes are fantastic.

  2. Wait wait WAIT…..what pressing ultimatum have I given you ??? hahahaha, I’m dying laughing here šŸ™‚ And I’m so happy I could help with those pockets. The dress is soooo good and so well pressed may I add haha. I’m sure you will make an amazing zebra cake!

    • Hehehe one day I’ll make a meme with your photo saying “press those seams” to tape to my sewing machine hehehe ā¤ love you and I'm thankful to have you because you make me want to improve, and trust me that's not an easy thing to do! ā¤ I'm starting to feel nervous about the cake heheh hope it goes how I'm imagining it šŸ˜‰

  3. What a sweet and original dress. Perfect for an almost 2 year old! I can’t wait to see that zebra cake, it’s undoubtedly going to be awesome. and yay for snaps!

  4. So perfect! The two prints go so well together! And the pockets are just beautiful! Well done! Happy birthday to your sweet girl!

  5. This is such a beautiful dress, love your choice of fabrics and your attention to detail co-ordinating the dress with the cake šŸ™‚ Using eyelet for the pockets works really well.
