Project Sew It – February

This month on Project Sew It the theme is blouses so Yep I made another Waterfall! 😀 I know what you’re thinking this blog is turning into the Waterfall Raglan versions blog hahahah sorry but this pattern won my heart and I told I would have to copy the beautiful woven version that Toya made (here) so here we go. Last week Chalk and Notch had a blog tour for this pattern and some other woven versions showed up like this stunning dress from Nicole (here), be sure to check the tour posts because they’re filled with super inspiring versions.

For my take on it I choose a beautiful light crepe fabric that came in the London Sew Social “goodie bag”, courtesy of The Sweet Mercerie. It’s a bit “see through” but I think it works perfectly for blouses, just see these beautiful ones from Eva and Trine.

To make this I used the same size as for my knit versions (size 6), I knew I’d be ok since the pattern has enough ease on the bodice pieces. The sleeve would be ok for me on the bicep area too, since mine measures closer to a size 4, but since its designed to be a fitted sleeve around the forearm I changed it a bit. Basically I added 2cm to each side at the wrist area and redrafted the sleeve from the bicep area down. I’m pretty sure this must be a totally lazy/don’t copy what I’ve done method, but I’m here to tell the truth so that’s how I did it hahaha Please don’t hate me sewing masters!! 😉 I also removed the hem allowance for the sleeve and finished it with a narrow hem.

After finishing the neckline with bias bound in the same fabric, it started to funnel a bit so there was some unpicking involved and some free style cutting to get it to a point that made me happy. After that I didn’t have more fabric to finish it in woven so I decided to use navy rib matching some parts of the fabric. 😀 I know you keep seeing this neckline finish from me, but I love it so and I’m excused because I did try to make it all in woven!! heheheh

It took me a long time to cut all the pieces on my fabric because I din’t have enough which lets face it keep happening around here LOL, in the end I had to make the front ruffle shorter by a few cm, I think it was about 8 cm but I’m not sure anymore, sorry. The good surprise was that this fabric was a breeze to cut and much easier to sew than I expected, so its definitely a great one to start with if you want to move from up your game a notch.

I’m super in Love with it and I can definitely say its one of the prettiest things in my closet right now. ❤ I have to make more hahaha But next time I’ll probably copy Celina’s version (here), its so GOOD! LOVE IT ❤

My own stripes

I’m not sure how to start this post but here goes. 😀 You see, a few weeks ago I decided to play a bit with the idea of designing my own custom prints in fabric. And though my skills on the matter are limited I couldn’t help myself. I came up with a series of coordinates, pretty basic designs and colors, but thing is they were exactly what I wanted. After sharing the idea in IG and FB and seeing people being so supportive I went ahead and ordered them at Spoonflower.

Since I wasn’t absolutely sure if the prints would end up like I wanted, I choose a less expensive fabric, their Kona Cotton Ultra for these stripes. It basically feels like a quilting cotton and as soon as I laid eyes on it I knew it was perfect pairing to this pattern from one of the A Sunny Spot books.

It is pattern #02 from Girls Simple Clothes, in size 110cm with 120cm length. You can see other projects from this book in a post from last year (here). The only changes I made were to the neckline finish and ruffle. After redrafting the neckline curve to be a bit wider I added a band in rib knit from Nosh, in a color that paired beautifully with the main fabric. Somethings are meant to be.

The ruffle is supposed to be cut on fold but I decided to change that and finish it with a zigzag stitch, I think this particular one is kind of an overlock stitch. The idea was to cut the excess fabric close to the stitches, but I became fond of how it looked when the fabric started to fray so I left it.

I always like to think that my style is happy and fun at least when it comes to the kids clothes, and I think this top really conveys that (I’m such a cliché hahaha). It feels amazing to look at the fabric and think I designed it too, even as basic as a striped fabric is. Even better was to see M’s face when I showed her the top, she was so so happy with it. ❤ Totally worth it!

Some of you asked if I would be making these available at Spoonflower. I’m not sure yet. I have been considering it but it seems a bit complicated so I’m a bit on the fence, I would definitely love to be able to sell them so I’ll keep you posted on that.

Ok I just had to brag about perfect stripe matching! hahaha It could be better pressed though… ahem… But still… stripes match thats what counts! hehehe

I won’t lie, I feel a bit proud of this. LOL I wish I could order tons of yards of my own prints hahaha I would love to have these stripes in jersey naturally, you know me, nothing makes me happier than sewing knits. Although I’m not sure I would have striped matched so perfectly if this was jersey! heheheh 😉

Waterfall Raglan + Ash Pants

Yep I’m not done with the Waterfall… heheh I made this one back in November along with these super cool (pardon my lack of modesty here heheh) Ash pants from Petit a Petit patterns. This was one of my favorite outfits from last year.

M. was really needing pants and after I saw the gorgeous ones Rachel made for Petit a Petit tour (you can see them here), I knew I had to make a pair too. As you may know I have a special relation with the Ash Jumpsuit pattern, it was the reason this blog came to be,  so I always go back to it from time to time. ❤  The fabric is another awesome find from my local shop, some kind of knit/denim thing, medium weight and just perfect for this.

I think the Waterfall Raglan from Chalk and Notch will be used a million times around here, both kids and women’s version, just warning you. 😀 The fabric is gorgeous jersey from NOSH, seriously you may think I’m biased from having blogged for them from time to time, but this is really GOOD fabric, totally my first choice whenever I can afford it. This color is no longer available but they have so many great ones, I can’t open their page without wanting to buy a million things, you’ve been warned! hehe

Ohh good times when my double needle wasn’t playing tricks on me. ❤ See that little mistake on the part where the ruffle joins? Yeah my sewing isn’t perfect but I always try to believe it is better to let go… hahaha Who has time to unpick a serged seam anyway? To tell the truth I sometimes do but its only when I just can’t get pass it and I can totally live with this one… maybe I shouldn’t… but I can… 😀
